Organizational Glitch

I'm quite forgetful; I don't naturally remember things on my own. However, I still consider myself to be a pretty organized person. What I lack in memory skills I make up for in diligent, detailed calendars (thank goodness for iCal on my Mac). My iCal ensures I remember everything that needs to get done and what is going on. Color coordinated, and includes important dates and appointments for myself and other people, birthdays, holidays, etc. Everything is in my iCal. E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G.

You can imagine my dismay when I found out that I had forgotten a VERY special day last week. I don't know what happened, but somehow I forgot my Papa's 58th birthday! NOOO! It may be because he technically doesn't have a birthday this year; he was born on February 29th (i.e. leap year). His birthday was therefore not in my calendar this year (it will be in 2016 though). Can I blame this on an organizational glitch then? Or maybe merely a momentary lapse of attention...? Hm. I should've remembered!

Anywho, all excuses aside... Happy belated birthday to the best Papa in the world. Wish I was in Norway to give you a big hug. You know you're more than welcome to come visit me in Sydney!
Hva skulle jeg gjort uten deg, kjære far? Jeg er så heldig som har en så morsom og blid far som deg. Tusen takk for at du er deg!
On a totally different note… Today was my first day of class! While at Macquarie I'll delve into the world of Health Psychology, Organizational Psychology, and Psychopathology. In addition to these classes I'll be taking two more classes at UiT. I think it will be a busy semester!

It was a good day. We only had one lecture in Psychopathology, which ended up only lasting 25 minutes. To our surprise, all the lectures in both Organizational Psychology and Psychopathology will be online, meaning we can watch them from the comfort of our own living room (or bed, if we're really lazy). We will only have to physically go to the lectures in Health Psychology. We do have tutorials in all three classes, though. The class size of the tutorials is between 15-30 students, so they're more suitable for class activities etc. They last between 1-2 hours. Lectures are not mandatory, but you have to attend 80% of the tutorials to pass the class.

School here seems much more similar to the American system than to Norwegian. In our program in Norway, our courses are set up in a modular manner. By this I mean that we (usually) only have one course at a time, followed by a long (typically 4-5 hour) final written exam or paper, and then we start a new course. It's nice in the sense that you only have to concentrate on one course at a time. At the same time, your whole grade depends on that one final exam, which can be pretty stressful.

Here (and in the US) the grade in the class is comprised of several smaller components, not just one final exam. You have assignments, quizzes, attendance, and exams that all count towards your overall grade. You have to work throughout the whole semester, and everything doesn't depend on one single day. After forgetting such an important day as my dad's birthday, I have realized that I need to be more meticulous with my iCal. No time for lollygagging! Now that we have our syllabi, it's time to get all assignments, exams, quizzes etc in there... Asap!

No class tomorrow, but I have something else "fun" planned. More about that later. Time for bed!

Love,
Suzy
